Where Is My Monitoring Data Stored?

Infrastructure Location

Your Server Scout monitoring data is stored exclusively on EU-hosted server infrastructure. We maintain a strict policy that your data never leaves the European Union, ensuring compliance with regional data protection requirements and providing peace of mind regarding data sovereignty.

All monitoring data collected from your Linux servers remains within EU borders throughout its entire lifecycle, from initial collection to final deletion.

Data Isolation and Security

Each Server Scout customer account operates with complete data isolation. Your monitoring data is segregated at the account level, meaning users can only access servers and metrics associated with their own organisation. This architecture ensures your monitoring data remains private and secure from other customers.

Multiple layers of security protect your data:

  • Encryption in transit: All communication between the Server Scout agent and dashboard uses HTTPS/TLS encryption
  • Encryption at rest: Stored monitoring data is encrypted on our server infrastructure
  • Secure agent communication: Agents only make outbound HTTPS connections to our secure API endpoints

What Data Does the Agent Send?

The Server Scout agent collects and transmits system metrics in JSON format via HTTPS POST requests to our dashboard API. The data includes:

  • CPU usage percentages
  • Memory utilisation statistics
  • Disk space and I/O metrics
  • Network throughput measurements
  • System load averages
  • Process counts and resource usage

No Sensitive Application Data

It's important to understand what the Server Scout agent doesn't collect. The agent exclusively reads system-level metrics from standard Linux interfaces like /proc and /sys. It does not access:

  • Application-specific data
  • Log file contents
  • Database records
  • Configuration files containing sensitive information
  • User files or directory contents
  • Email or web server content

This approach ensures your business-critical application data remains on your servers whilst still providing comprehensive system monitoring.

Data Retention Periods

Server Scout employs a tiered data retention strategy to balance detailed monitoring with efficient storage:

Raw Data (24 hours) High-frequency metrics collected every 5-30 seconds are retained in their original granularity for 24 hours, allowing detailed analysis of recent system behaviour.

Averaged Data (7 days) After 24 hours, raw data points are averaged into longer intervals and stored for 7 days, providing historical trend analysis whilst reducing storage requirements.

Notification History (30 days) Alert notifications and their associated metadata are retained for 30 days, giving you access to recent alerting activity and patterns.

Permanent Data Deletion

When you delete a server from your Server Scout dashboard, all associated monitoring data is permanently removed from our infrastructure. This includes:

  • All historical metrics for that server
  • Alert configurations and notification history
  • Any custom thresholds or monitoring rules

Similarly, if you delete your entire Server Scout account, all data associated with your organisation is permanently purged from our systems. This deletion is irreversible and ensures complete data removal.

Compliance and Transparency

Our EU-hosted infrastructure approach supports compliance with data protection regulations including GDPR. The combination of geographic data residency, encryption at multiple levels, and clear data retention policies provides transparency about how your monitoring data is handled.

For organisations requiring specific compliance documentation or detailed infrastructure information, our support team can provide additional details about our data handling practices. Simply submit a support ticket through your dashboard, and we'll respond with the relevant documentation.

Your monitoring data's security and privacy are fundamental to Server Scout's design, from the lightweight agent architecture through to our secure, EU-based storage infrastructure.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where does ServerScout store my monitoring data?

ServerScout stores all monitoring data exclusively on EU-hosted server infrastructure. Your data never leaves the European Union throughout its entire lifecycle, from initial collection to final deletion. This ensures compliance with regional data protection requirements and provides data sovereignty peace of mind.

How do I set up monitoring without compromising my sensitive data?

The ServerScout agent only collects system-level metrics from standard Linux interfaces like /proc and /sys. It doesn't access application data, log files, database records, configuration files, user files, or any business-critical information. Simply install the agent and it will safely monitor CPU, memory, disk, and network metrics without touching sensitive data.

Why can't I see another organization's monitoring data in my dashboard?

ServerScout implements complete data isolation at the account level. Each customer account is segregated, meaning users can only access servers and metrics associated with their own organization. Multiple security layers including encryption in transit, encryption at rest, and secure agent communication protect your data from other customers.

How does ServerScout's data encryption work?

ServerScout uses multiple encryption layers to protect your data. All communication between agents and the dashboard uses HTTPS/TLS encryption in transit. Stored monitoring data is encrypted at rest on the server infrastructure. Agents only make outbound HTTPS connections to secure API endpoints, ensuring end-to-end protection.

How long does ServerScout keep my monitoring data?

ServerScout uses a tiered retention strategy: raw high-frequency data is kept for 24 hours, averaged data for 7 days, and notification history for 30 days. This balances detailed monitoring with efficient storage, allowing recent detailed analysis while maintaining historical trends.

What happens to my data when I delete a server or account?

When you delete a server, all associated monitoring data is permanently removed, including historical metrics, alert configurations, and notification history. If you delete your entire account, all organizational data is permanently purged from the systems. This deletion is irreversible and ensures complete data removal.

Is ServerScout GDPR compliant for monitoring data?

ServerScout's EU-hosted infrastructure supports GDPR compliance through geographic data residency, encryption at multiple levels, and clear data retention policies. The combination of EU-only storage, data isolation, and transparent handling practices provides compliance support for organizations with data protection requirements.
