What is a Progressive Web App?

The Server Scout dashboard can be installed on your device as a Progressive Web App (PWA). This means you can run it like a native application, complete with its own window, desktop icon, and quick launch capabilities. Unlike traditional web pages that only work in your browser, a PWA bridges the gap between web and mobile applications.

Benefits of Installing Server Scout as a PWA

Installing Server Scout as a PWA offers several advantages:

• Quick access: Launch the dashboard directly from your home screen or taskbar without opening a browser first
• Push notifications: Receive real-time alerts for server issues even when the app isn't actively open
• Offline capability: Cached pages load quickly, even on slow connections
• Full-screen experience: The dashboard runs without browser chrome, giving you more screen space for monitoring
• Native app feel: Server Scout appears in your application launcher alongside other installed programs

Installing on Desktop

Chrome and Edge

1. Open your browser and navigate to app.serverscout.ie
2. Log into your Server Scout dashboard
3. Look for the install icon (⊕) in the address bar, or
4. Click the three-dot menu and select "Install Server Scout"
5. Confirm the installation when prompted

Once installed, Server Scout will appear as a standalone application in your system's application launcher. You can pin it to your taskbar or dock for even quicker access.

Firefox

Firefox doesn't currently support PWA installation on desktop, but you can create a similar experience by bookmarking the dashboard and using it in full-screen mode (F11).

Installing on Mobile

iOS (Safari)

1. Open Safari and go to app.serverscout.ie
2. Log into your dashboard
3. Tap the Share button (square with arrow pointing up)
4. Scroll down and select "Add to Home Screen"
5. Customise the app name if desired, then tap "Add"

The Server Scout icon will now appear on your home screen alongside your other apps.

Android (Chrome)

1. Open Chrome and navigate to app.serverscout.ie
2. Sign into your account
3. Look for the "Add Server Scout to Home screen" banner at the bottom, or
4. Tap the three-dot menu and select "Add to Home Screen"
5. Confirm the installation

Server Scout will be added to your app drawer and home screen, functioning like any other Android application.

Offline Capabilities

The Server Scout PWA uses a service worker to cache static assets, ensuring the dashboard loads quickly even on unreliable connections. However, it's important to understand the limitations:

• Cached content: The dashboard interface, navigation, and previously viewed data load instantly from cache
• Fresh data: Live server metrics, alerts, and real-time monitoring data always require an internet connection
• Background sync: When connectivity returns, the PWA automatically syncs any missed updates

This means you can browse historical data and navigate the interface whilst offline, but current server status requires an active network connection.

Managing Your PWA Installation

Automatic Updates

The service worker handles updates automatically. When you visit the dashboard, it checks for new versions in the background and applies updates seamlessly. You'll always have the latest features without manual intervention.

Uninstalling the PWA

Desktop: Right-click the Server Scout icon in your application launcher or taskbar and select uninstall, or remove it through your system's application settings.

iOS: Press and hold the Server Scout icon on your home screen, then tap the X or select "Remove App".

Android: Long-press the Server Scout icon and drag it to "Uninstall", or manage it through your device's application settings.
