Searching and Filtering the Server Dashboard

Search Function

The search box at the top of your dashboard allows you to quickly find servers by typing part of their name. The search works against both the hostname and the display name you've set in Server Scout, so you can use whichever naming convention works best for your organisation.

Simply start typing in the search box and the server list will automatically filter to show matching results. The search is case-insensitive and matches partial text, so typing "web" will show servers named "web01", "webserver", or "production-web".

Group Filtering

If you've organised your servers into groups, you can filter the dashboard to show only servers from specific groups. Group tabs appear below the search box, displaying each of your configured groups.

Click on any group tab to show only the servers in that group. Click the "All" tab to return to viewing all your servers across all groups. This is particularly useful for routine health checks when you want to focus on a specific environment or server type.

Status Filtering

The fleet health bar at the top of your dashboard shows colour-coded counts for each server status: online (green), warning (amber), offline (red), and paused (grey). These aren't just status indicators—they're clickable filters.

Click on any status count in the fleet health bar to filter your view to show only servers in that state. For example, clicking the red offline count will show only your offline servers, making it easy to focus on servers that need immediate attention.

Sort Options

Use the sort dropdown to organise your servers by different metrics:

  • Name: Alphabetical sorting by server name
  • CPU Usage: Highest to lowest CPU utilisation
  • Memory Usage: Highest to lowest RAM usage
  • Disk Usage: Highest to lowest disk space usage
  • Load Average: Highest to lowest system load

Sorting by resource usage is particularly valuable during incidents when you need to quickly identify which servers are under the most stress.

Combining Filters

The real power comes from combining search, group, and status filters together. All filters work simultaneously, allowing you to create very specific views of your infrastructure.

For example, you might:

  • Filter to the "production" group, then click on "offline" status to see only offline production servers
  • Search for "web" and sort by CPU usage to find which web servers are running hottest
  • Filter to your "database" group and sort by memory usage to check RAM utilisation across your database tier

The fleet health bar updates dynamically to reflect your filtered view, showing status counts and percentages for only the servers currently displayed.

Practical Workflows

Here are some common ways to use these filtering features effectively:

During Incidents: Sort by CPU usage or memory usage to quickly identify servers that might be struggling. The highest-loaded servers appear at the top of the list.

Quick Server Access: Use the search function to jump directly to a specific server when you know its name. This is much faster than scrolling through a long server list.

Routine Health Checks: Use group filtering to systematically check different parts of your infrastructure. Filter to your "web servers" group, then sort by disk usage to check if any are running low on space.

Problem Investigation: Combine status filtering with grouping to focus on specific issues. Click "warning" status, then filter to a specific group to see which servers in that environment need attention.

Capacity Planning: Sort by different resource metrics whilst filtered to specific groups to understand usage patterns across different server types.

The dashboard remembers your current filters as you navigate between servers, making it easy to return to your filtered view after investigating individual server details.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I search for servers in ServerScout dashboard

Use the search box at the top of your dashboard and start typing part of the server name. The search works against both hostname and display name, is case-insensitive, and matches partial text. For example, typing 'web' will show servers named 'web01', 'webserver', or 'production-web'.

Can I filter servers by status in ServerScout

Yes, click on any status count in the fleet health bar (green for online, amber for warning, red for offline, grey for paused) to filter your view to show only servers in that state. This makes it easy to focus on servers that need immediate attention.

How does group filtering work in ServerScout dashboard

Group tabs appear below the search box displaying each of your configured groups. Click on any group tab to show only servers from that specific group, or click 'All' to view servers across all groups. This is useful for focusing on specific environments or server types.

What sorting options are available for servers

You can sort servers by Name (alphabetical), CPU Usage, Memory Usage, Disk Usage, or Load Average (all resource metrics sort from highest to lowest). Sorting by resource usage is particularly valuable during incidents to identify servers under stress.

Can I combine multiple filters together

Yes, all filters work simultaneously allowing very specific infrastructure views. You can combine search, group filtering, and status filtering together. For example, filter to 'production' group, then click 'offline' status to see only offline production servers.

ServerScout dashboard not showing filtered results properly

The dashboard should automatically filter as you type in the search box and update dynamically when you click group tabs or status counts. The fleet health bar updates to reflect your filtered view, showing status counts only for currently displayed servers.

How to quickly find servers during an incident

Sort by CPU usage or memory usage to identify struggling servers - the highest-loaded servers appear at the top. You can also combine status filtering (click warning or offline counts) with group filtering to focus on specific problematic areas of your infrastructure.

Does ServerScout remember my dashboard filters

Yes, the dashboard remembers your current filters as you navigate between servers, making it easy to return to your filtered view after investigating individual server details. This maintains your workflow when moving between the dashboard and server detail pages.
